QuickLogger 2.7 is now available for download. In this update I have (with the assistance of some very helpful users) introduced a system for tracking Projects (or categories) in addition to Tasks. This functionality is currently only available in Excel, but it seems to work pretty well. In addition to tracking projects, you are now given the total number of hours spent on every task and every project for the day. This total is updated whenever you log a new task.

In addition to this feature, the Project and Task cells now auto wrap, so long names will not be lost under the cell next door. Also, the zip file now includes the icon file so that it does not have to be downloaded by the program.

I have added two polls to the website. Please drop by the Polls page and give me your input on new functions you wish to see!

QuickLogger version 2.6 is now available for download. This new version includes the following updates and changes:

Bug Fixes:

The LastTimestamp functionality was not working correctly when non-Excel file types were being used. This has been fixed.

Features:

Per the request of a user named Jason, I have added the ability to configure a “Stop” task. When you log your stop task, the Excel spreadsheet will not include a time reading for that time period. So, if you take a break between projects, you can log your stop task and the Total hours for the day will not reflect that time. - Thanks Jason!

We have also added an automatic shortcut creator, which will be useful for those who do not have AutoHotKey installed on their computers. This function will generate and maintain a shortcut link to the latest log file. It can be configured to save the shortcut to your Desktop or to the QuickLoggger program folder, and it can also be turned off.

I made a lot of formatting improvements in this version, as further efforts in my attempts to minimize the number of differences in the program display brought on by different Windows display settings. If your QuickLogger does not look the same as the images on the Features page, please send me a screenshot of the main window and the Options window so that I can see what is going on. Eventually, I want the program to look exactly the same, regardless of the formatting someone may have set up in Windows. Wish me luck…

A result of my formatting changes was that Tabbing in the main window now works properly. If you tab through the New Task, the Saved Tasks, and the two buttons, the focus will automatically be returned to the New Task at the top.

Gerben has made some changes to the command line parameters that allow the ability to log forgotten task when using one of the text-based log files. The new logging commands are:

-b (begin, minutes back or start time; 24 hour notation)

-d (duration)

-r resume current task

-p resume previous task (instead of -t “taskname”)

Gerben also removed the -l parameter, which means that QuicLogger will now always start logging when using the command line.

I would like to thank Gerben again for all of his assistance. His is single-handedly creating and tweaking the command-line functionality, and has proven to be a great resource for figuring out coding problems and just making things work better.

Well, the last few weeks have been hectic, but I have spent some time making much-needed updates to QuickLogger, adding requested functions and adding some more that came up as I went along. Here is an in-depth description of changes to QuickLogger 2.5. Many thanks to all of the users who suggested ideas and who helped me work out the kinks in the new version, especially Gerben, who wrote a few new pieces of code for me.

Bug fixes

There was a spurious message box in the 24-hour setting, but it has now been removed.

I have fixed some issues with how QuickLogger was inserting the daily Total hours in the Excel spreadsheet.

Loading the favicon file from the Internet was causing the program to load slowly. It now gets loaded from a local file.

New Features

QuickLogger will now save your log files in different folders for each month of the year. - Thanks Sebastian!

Updating functionality has been added.

You can now choose to have QuickLogger alert you when there is an update available, or even choose to have the program update itself. Up to this point, the only updating message was a change to the favicon.

A little quality of life feature that I have added relates to the window placement function. In previous versions of QuickLogger you had to guess at the best numbers to use in the Top and Left option fields, or play with the placement multiple times to get it placed right. Now, you can just go to the Options, place your window where you want, and click on the “Set window placement” link to fill in the fields automatically. Don’t forget to save your changes.

In previous versions of QuickLogger it was likely that you would have to have the program generate a new INI file when you updated, losing all of your settings. Now, QuickLogger will automatically fill in missing fields in your INI file, which will make future updates seamless with your logging history and settings.

The Options dialog has been reformatted to make it easier to manage the increasing number of options.

If you click on any task in the task list the text in the New Task input box will be filled in, allowing you to make changes to past tasks without having to re-type them. - Thanks Toby!

QuickLogger now automatically updates its AutoHotKey script with a link to the latest logging file. There is also an option to turn this on or off, in case you don’t have AHK installed (defaulted to off). - Thanks Scott!

Pressing Enter while focus is in the Saved Tasks list now logs the task. - Thanks Gerben and Patrick!

Pressing Escape while the program is open will now close it. - Thanks Gerben and Patrick!

Pressing the down arrow while focus is in the New Task field will put the focus in the Saved Tasks list. This makes it much easier to get to logged tasks without touching the mouse. - Thanks Gerben!

QuickLogger now supports the native Excel 2007 file type “.xlsx”.

Gerben re-wrote the Command Line functionality, which can be used with programs like Launchy and Executor. It now allows a few more options, like actually logging the task, and leaves the door open for more functionality in the future.

As alway, if you have any questions, want to see any other functions added, or need to report a bug, please feel free to drop me a line.

I neglected to change the version number in the Title Bar of the HTA to version 2.2, and I also ran into a small initialization issue with the new TwelveTwentyFour variable. Those problems have been fixed, and the new version is on the server. Also, if you are upgrading from version 2.1 or before, be sure to add the following lines to your INI file underneath the FirstDay variable before running the new HTA for the first time:

TwelveTwentyFour=12
TimeFormat=Formula
Doing so will make the transition work better. Otherwise, you will need to rename the INI and let the program generate a new one.

I finally found the time to do some updates to QuickLogger, so version 2.2 is on the server for download. There are multiple changes in this release:

Scott reported an error where the Day of the Week setting was not affecting the filename. This issue is now fixed.

For those using Excel spreadsheets to track your time there are two new enhancements:

First, I have added a Timestamp format choice, and either 12 or 24-hour format can now be used.

Second, the Elapsed Time column information can now be saved either as a formula or as text. If you want to select a range of cells and reorder them to see the time for a specific project, you can now do that if you have the text option selected.

Third, the total time in each day is now displayed in the spreadsheet underneath all of your logged tasks.

In addition to these three changes, the file type selection was changed to radio buttons so that the new options could be disabled when XLS was not the selected file type.

I have made the time elapsed since the currently-logged task show up next to that task at the top of the application. This makes it easy to see how long you have been working on your task without requiring you to open your log.

As a side benefit to that change, I have adjusted the txt, html, and csv files to insert the elapsed time based on the last time logged, not based on the file timestamp, which has been the default since the original QuickLogger 1. This makes it possible to edit the log file without messing up the elapsed time.

Well, that’s it for now. There are still a few ideas listed on the Feature Requests page, but I have not figured out how to implement some of them yet, specifically the idea of categories. If you have any ideas or solutions for me to consider, please drop me a line. Also, as always, let me know if you run into any bugs or problems.

Version 2.1 is now available for download. This update to QuickLogger includes four minor enhancements.

First, QuickLogger now orders dynamic tasks in the Most Recently Used order. This means that if you double-click on a dynamic task it will be moved to the top of the in the dynamic list. Two users, Dave and Curt, both suggested this change.

Second, you will now see the currently logged task at the top of the main window. If you are as forgetful as me, this should come in handy. Thanks Toby!

Third, the options screen has changed a bit. The ‘View/Hide Options” button has been changed into a Cancel button and placed at the bottom next to “Change Options”. This was a GUI layout idea that I never really considered in the initial design. Thanks Toby!

Fourth, QuickLogger user Ray Lim passed along to me some code that could be useful to those of you using Launchy. Version 2.1 will allow you to pass a parameter to QuickLogger via the command line. This parameter will be automatically added to the New Task field, only requiring you to press the Enter key or the “Log It!” button.

To set up Launchy to work with QuickLogger, add the QuickLogger directory to the recognized Launchy Directories. To add an new entry, just open Launchy, type Quicklogger | “my new task entry”, and press Enter. Launchy and Quicklogger will then pick up the parameters and pop them into the task box.

I do not have Launchy installed, but Ray wrote and is using the code, so there should be no problems.

As always, if you encounter an issue with the program, please take a moment and report it to me.
