Help

QuickLogger is intended to be easy to use, and completely configurable. Here are some helpful hints to fix minor issues and get the most out of the program.

First things first…

QuickLogger gets most of its information from its INI file, and a little bit of information from the Excel file, if you are saving in that format. If you are running into weird errors or having issues with the script, first try deleting your INI file and running the program again. Resetting everything might get it back to normal.

If your problem does not go away, please report the bug.

Update

update imageIf you see this favicon in the top left of your QuickLogger, it means that a new update has been made available. This is an outdated update alert, that has been replaced in version 2.5 and later. Visit the downloads page and get the latest version.

Vista

In Windows Vista you will need to make sure that the program and the logs are both kept in directories with user editable access. If you place the program in Program Files or another protected place, you may run into issues.

Excel

If you save your logs in Excel, you may see Quick Logger sit there for a few moments after you enter a task. This is because Excel takes more time to load and save tasks than the text-based formats. You may also see this as your log gets bigger.

Also, if you are Using Excel 2007 or later, you should choose the “Excel 2007″ file type option. This will save your logs in the native .xlsx file format.

Hotkeys

QuickLogger will automatically generate an AutoHotKey file when it runs for the first time. This file will be placed in the same folder as the program, and the hotkey it creates is Ctrl + Alt + L. To use this file you will need to have AutoHotKey installed. If you do, just double-click on the file to have it run in the background and watch for that hotkey to be pressed. You can add it to your Startup Folder to make it run when the computer starts. (more shortcuts here)
If you don’t have AutoHotKey installed, you can set up a shortcut key in the following way:

  1. Right-click on QuickLogger.hta
  2. Select Create Shortcut from the dropdown list
  3. Right-click on the shortcut that was created
  4. Select Properties from the dropdown list
  5. In the properties window, place your cursor in the Shortcut field and press the shortcut key combination you want to use.
  6. Click OK

You can put this shortcut anywhere you want—it does not have to be in the same folder as QuickKey.

Automatic Logging

If you want to have QuickLogger start up for you at a scheduled time, you can set up a scheduled task in Windows to have the program pop up at 15 minute intervals or on any other schedule you like. Find out more at Microsoft Support or at Lifehacker.

Power User Configuration

If you are interested in changing the content or order of the columns in the text, HTML, or CSV files, there is some ability to do so within the HTA itself. Feel free to play around with the code.

Also, the INI file can be edited directly, if you like. This is helpful for adding new tasks in bulk or adjusting tasks you already have saved. The format should be pretty straightforward.
